Nepal’s brilliant spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has been sentenced to 8 years in jail for raping a woman. Kathmandu District Court awarded this punishment to Sandeep today i.e. on 8 January. Along with the punishment, Sandeep will have to pay a fine of Rs 3 lakh and the victim will also have to pay Rs 2 lakh. Court’s Information Officer Chandra Prasad Panthi gave this information.

“The court has sentenced him to eight years in prison,” a court official told AFP. Lamichhane was not in the court at the time of sentencing and has not been taken into custody yet. Sandeep’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire said that he will appeal against this decision in the High Court. Lamichhane was accused of rape by a 17-year-old girl in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August 2022. He was released in January 2023.

At the time the allegation was made, Sandeep was in the West Indies and playing for Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Then when the arrest warrant was issued, Sandeep was ordered to immediately return to the country.

However, Sandeep Lamichhane had absconded after the warrant was issued and his location could not be found. Nepal Police took the help of Interpol to arrest Sandeep. Then Interpol had issued a ‘diffusion’ notice against Sandeep. After waiting for a few days, when Sandeep landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the police arrested him.

Let us tell you, Sandeep Lamichhane has also participated in the Indian Premier League. He has played for Delhi Capitals in this tournament. Sandeep’s record in IPL has been very good. He has taken 13 wickets in 9 matches at an average above 22. Many people hoped that this spinner would be counted among the best bowlers in future but for now he will have to go to jail for 8 years.
