It is noteworthy that Karunaratne captained the Sri Lankan cricket team in 30 matches, in which the team had to win 12, lose 12 and draw 6 matches. So, the historic victory under the captaincy of Karunaratne came in the year 2019, when the team won the Test series in South Africa. With this, Sri Lanka became the first Asian team to achieve this feat in South Africa.
